The new standard for UV/Vis spectroscopy in 96-well format
The SpecPlate is a groundbreaking multi-chamber plate that sets a new standard in plate-based UV/Vis spectroscopy. It offers cost and time savings in pharmaceutical and biotechnology research. Samples with a wide concentration range can be precisely measured without dilution, and its alignment with the ANSI/SLAS standard enables seamless implementation into plate-based absorbance measurements. The SpecPlate addresses the error-proneness of standard UV multiwell plates, eliminates them, and combines the advantages, making it the better standard for industrial and academic research laboratories.

Günter Tenzler, Managing Director, INHECO Industrial Heating & Cooling GmbH"The SpecPlate from PHABIOC has exceeded our expectations and is perfectly suited for use on Inheco GmbH's shaker products. Particularly impressive is the ability to stack four to five SpecPlates in one Incubator DWP without the need for an additional frame. This functionality makes the SpecPlate an efficiency-enhancing component in a laboratory. It's no surprise that it was named LABO's Product of the Year 2025."

Tecan Trading AG"Working with the SpecPlate is a pleasure, not only because it allows to overcome typical limitations of absorbance assays performed in standard microplates. By its unique design, meniscus effects influencing the absorbance readouts are completely removed, resulting in improved signal uniformity. The incorporation of 4 different measurement chambers, with different pathlengths per sample, allows to increase the dynamic range of the measurement without any need of preliminary sample dilution. The filling volume of just 36 µl per well helps to save valuable sample, especially when compared to standard 96-well microplates. In addition to all these exciting benefits, the plate is easy to handle both manually and when integrated with Tecan's automated liquid handling systems such as Fluent® and Freedom EVO® .

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the SpecPlate?
The SpecPlate is an innovative multi-well plate that, thanks to its special design, makes UV/Vis measurements significantly more efficient, precise and sustainable.
What distinguishes the SpecPlate from conventional plates?
In contrast to classic multiwell plates, the SpecPlate 96 contains special measuring structures that eliminate common sources of error such as pipetting errors or meniscus formation – without any dilution, even at high concentrations.
Do I need special equipment for the SpecPlate?
No. The SpecPlate is based on the ANSI/SLAS standard. The inlets are located centrally in the wells, and the measurement chambers are arranged like a 384-well plate—making it fully compatible with common pipetting robots and plate readers.
What material is the SpecPlate made of?
The SpecPlate is made of cyclic olefin copolymers (COC) – a high-purity, optically clear material that offers optimal properties for UV/Vis measurements.
How much sample does a measuring structure need?
By default, 36 µL is used to fill a measurement structure. However, you can also use individual chambers. Information on optimal filling can be found in our TechNote .
For which applications is the SpecPlate suitable?
The SpecPlate is suitable for all common UV/Vis applications – e.g., protein concentration measurement at 280 nm or cell growth analysis at 600 nm.
How do you fill the measurement structures correctly?
Filling is possible both manually with a pipette and automatically. Detailed instructions can be found in the TechNote on filling .
How can the SpecPlate be integrated into existing processes?
The SpecPlate was developed strictly according to ANSI/SLAS standards and can be easily integrated into existing laboratory workflows and automated systems – without additional hardware.
How resistant is the SpecPlate to chemicals?
The COC material used is chemically resistant to many common reagents, including acetone and various alcohols. Details can be found in the Chemical Resistance Sheet .
How do I work with the measurement data obtained?
Assign the measured values to the respective channels of the structure – upon request, we can provide you with a simple Excel tool for data organization. We are currently working with plate reader manufacturers for further software integration. Please contact us if you have specific requirements.
